I did these 12 things to find happiness and this is what happened

I did these 12 things to find happiness and this is what happened

Being happy isn't as hard as it appears to be at times.  In 2017, I was diagnosed with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). In a common human terms, mild depression. I started to stay away from the crowd, came to workplace on time and left on time, limited my interaction with friends, and indulged in stress overeating. I can honestly tell you that it worsened my situation. Next was doctor's advice, then medication. If you were experiencing similar to what I experienced, try to go through what I did.

Here are twelve things that I believe helped me increase my sense of happiness and made my life more fulfilling:

1. Social networks or relationships are essential to happiness. I know people are different, so I started accepting people for who or what they are; I stayed away from clashes, constant arguments, and I let go of all kinds of resentments (it's not easy at first, but try to take the hard way). If arguments seem inevitable, I still try and make an effort to understand the situation.

2. Being thankful is a great attitude.  We have so much to be thankful for. Taking time to thank those who provide even the smallest thing helped me realize how abundant my life is.

3. News is stressful. Get less of it. (Stay away from political shows and arguments about politics. You'll realize it's more fulfilling).

4. Being part of a spiritual group with its singing, sacraments, chanting, prayers and meditations encourages inner peace.

5. I learned to manage my time. Time is invaluable and too important to waste.

6. I laugh and laugh vigorously everyday.  Heard a good joke? I tell my friends and family about it. As they also say -'Laughter is the best medicine'.

7. I learned to communicate my feelings, affections, friendship and passion to people around me.

8. I try not to keep pent up anger of frustrations. I realized this is bad for my health. Instead, I find ways of expressing them in a way that will not cause more injury or hurt to anyone.

9. Working hard brings great personal contentment. It gives a sense of being capable in finishing our tasks. I work on things that I feel are valuable of my time.

10. Learning is a joyful exercise. I try and learn something new each day.  Learning also makes us increase our horizons.

11. I run, jog, walk and do other things that my body is made for. I feel alive.

12. I avoid exposure to negative elements like loud noises, toxins and hazardous places.

Try following these things by heart. Then come back to share your experience.
